The principle of confidentiality is about respecting the wishes and privacy of an individual. Professional healthcare workers have a duty of care to service users and must not disclose information relating to the individual unless absolutely necessary.
Is confidentiality a legal requirement?
There are many aspects of UK law that relate to confidentiality. These include the Human Rights Act 1998, The Care Act 2014, The Safety and Quality Act 2015, the Data Protection Act 2018, and the GDPR. These all cover aspects of patient confidentiality and how it works on a need to know basis but with important caveats to protect the individual or others when at risk.
