Bristol care home fails on food safety in recent inspection
A care home in Bedminster in Bristol has been threatened with enforcement action after a recent inspection revealed a number of failings, especially in the area of food safety.
The Honeymead Care Home was inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) back in August 2012. Following the visit, CQC inspectors reported that the home was not doing enough to ensure that residents were safe and receiving appropriate care.
A particular area of concern for the CQC was food safety training, as well as nutrition awareness, amongst Honeymead staff. The inspection report implied that staff members were not doing enough to protect residents from choking. The report stated:
“People’s health and welfare was at risk because unsafe food and drink had been given.
“Staff did not have the necessary information and knowledge to meet people’s nutritional needs in a safe manner.”
The home’s owner, Mimosa Healthcare, has now been told that it must make the required improvements to care training and standards or it will face enforcement action from the CQC. If changes are not made by the time of the next CQC inspection, the home could face closure.
