Care workers and health professionals in Wales are to undergo more advanced care training focused on providing end of life care, after the Welsh government launched its ‘Delivering End of Life Care’ plan.
In the plan, the government sets out its expectations of NHS Wales and its partners to ensure that standards of end of life care remain consistently high throughout the whole of the country. One of the aims laid out in the plan is to improve the training that care workers and health professionals receive to help them support people who are nearing the end of their lives.
With the right care training, health professionals will be equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to assist and support people wherever they choose to die, whether it’s in a hospital, hospice or their own homes.
Explaining why the ‘Delivering End of Life Care’ plan is so important, the government’s Health Minister Mark Drakeford said:

“How well we care for our dying reflects how we care as a society.
“Maintaining the dignity of an individual in their last days of life is vital. It can be done, by having open and honest conversations about the end of life and providing support to people and their families to plan for the end of life.”
