5 Critical Elements of Effective Employee Management

Your employees are the core of your small business. Careful employee management is key to making sure you get the most out of them. They may be skilled individually, but if led poorly, they’ll never perform at their best. Here are a few things you and your managers can do to lead employees to greatness.

Effective Employee Management

1. Establish a Strong Morning Routine

When your workers first come in, they may not be mentally ready to work, and for the most part, that’s OK. They have other things in their lives, and they may be eager to see co-workers. It’s your job to make sure that that they start off their mornings right so they perform well the rest of the day.
A common option is to have short morning meetings to update employees and tell them what to do and expect throughout the day. This gets them into the working mind set and fills their heads with productivity-related items.  Do something that signifies that it’s time to bear down and get things done.
Employee management is all about finding the right balance and careful planning of these short meetings can ensure focus remains throughout the day.

2. Acknowledge Success

If there’s anything that will disengage your employees, it’s the idea that success doesn’t matter. If doing things right doesn’t matter, what’s the point of working there? No amount of compensation will inspire the kind of engagement you need in a small business. However, acknowledging a job well done can make your employees feel important and recognised.
If it’s a big enough achievement, consider naming them employee of the month or congratulating them publicly. When you do, don’t just give them a loud and verbal pat on the back. Tell people what made that particular achievement special and how it helped the company get closer to a milestone.

3. Help Them With the Work-Life Balance

While there will never be a true work-life balance for you as a small business, it doesn’t have to be that way for your employees. They’re not required to have the same dedication to the company you do. In fact, forcing or encouraging that kind of thought process can lead to burn out and a high turnover rate.
Help employees balance their lives. If they’re having trouble finding a sitter for their kids, let them work from home until they find one. Are they trying to care for a sick parent? Flex-time is their friend. Not only will this maximise what productivity they can offer, but it’ll also likely result in their loyalty.

4. Give Them Free Time

At some point, you may have run into a situation where walking away from a difficult task was the best solution. Burying yourself in it wasn’t working, so you had to take a break to let your mind rest and reset. While some may have seen it as counter-productive, it was likely what you needed to do to get things done. More work doesn’t always translate to higher productivity.
Employees should have the option of approaching their work this way. Breaks throughout the day let them relax for a little bit and re-energise. As an added bonus, this can often spark moments of creativity, which translates to better things for your small business.

5. Give Them Goals

Setting goals is one of the most common ways of managing your employees. Unfortunately, many small businesses stop at assigning daily goals. While those are important, they’re far from the only milestones or targets your employees should have.
Aside from giving them daily goals, ask them what they want to accomplish during their tenure at your company. Have them think big. This shouldn’t be something that belongs on a to-do list-this should represent the culmination of their experience at your business. It doesn’t end there. Personal goals are also important, like improving their health or learning more about the industry. A little direction can go a long way when it comes to productive and happy employees.
The core of the matter is that proper employee management is about treating them like people. If you or your small business hits a wall when it comes to improving productivity, remember that. It will guide your thought-process in the right direction.
