Fife care home investigated over “grave medication error”
Fife Council has reportedly launched an investigation this week at a Cowdenbeath care home over what has been described as a “grave medication error” involving a resident.
Online local newspaper, the Tayside and Fife Courier, reported that the Valley House care home in Fife is being investigated by the council’s health and social care department.
It is alleged that there was an incident involving a severe medication error and one of the Hill Street home’s elderly residents, although it is not known to what extent the resident has been affected. A source speaking to the Courier said:
“The error is so severe other staff in the home have been threatened with suspension and disciplinary action if they disclose the facts to anyone outside the home.”
Fife Council’s head of older people’s services, Rona Laing, confirmed that an investigation has been launched. She also said that the council takes any drop in standards extremely seriously and considers the well-being of residents to be of chief importance.
All UK care workers responsible for administering and handling medication are generally required to undergo medication training courses before they can do so.
