An elderly resident of a care home in east Belfast has been rushed to hospital after a fire broke out on the premises.

The fire at the Victoria Park Care Home started last Sunday (12th June) at around 9pm at night. It was believed to have started in a ground floor room, although the cause of the fire has not yet been established. However, reports have suggested that an elderly resident from the home had to be led out of the burning building and later taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

Officers from the Fire and Rescue Service have said that the incident could have been a great deal more serious had the staff at the home not used their fire safety training to get the resident out safely and stop the fire from spreading.

Gary Davison from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service commended the staff for their actions, saying:

“Members of staff did an excellent job in taking the person out of the room which was on fire,”
They also closed the door to the bedroom and the corridor thus preventing the fire from spreading.”
