First Aid: What would you do? (Answers Pt.1)
In the last article, we talked about certain situations that may arise at work or elsewhere, to see if your initial reactions are correct. Remember that first aid training is designed to equip people with the knowledge and skills necessary in the event of an illness or accident.
So, time to check how you did with the answers to the questions in the last article!
1. Lying someone on their back can have catastrophic consequences should they happen to vomit or if their tongue should become floppy and obstruct their airways. It is always best to place the injured person in the recovery position.
2. Many people still believe that the best way to deal with a bleeding wound, particularly on a limb, is to apply a tourniquet to cut off the blood supply. Unfortunately, this can do more harm than good and it is preferable to apply a pressure dressing over the wound.
3. Head back or forwards? A common misconception sees a lot of people sitting with their heads thrown backwards when they have a nosebleed, but this can lead to mucus and blood running back down to the throat. Pinch the nose at the top and sit with your head forwards.
If you are not already booking yourself onto a first aid training course, and want to see how you fared with the final two questions, take a look at the next article to see how you did!
