Food safety paramount during the Olympic Games
Strict measures are being taken in the run-up to the Olympic Games this summer in an attempt to respond rapidly to any unusual symptoms and to prevent any outbreaks of food poisoning.
It is believed that the most likely health problems will be bouts of diarrhoea and vomiting in the Olympic Village, where 17,000 athletes and officials will be staying. Any outbreak is cause for concern, even more so when the eyes of the world will be on the UK.
As a result there will be spot checks at venues serving food and drink in the East End of London, with cafés, burger vans and snack stalls the focus of food hygiene checks.
The Olympics will represent a fantastic opportunity for businesses that serve food, but it is essential that staff undertake food safety training that will equip them to deal with the huge numbers of customers without putting anyone’s health at risk.
Training courses are designed to educate staff at all levels of food-handling, from working with pre-packaged foods to those who require high-level practical qualifications. Food poisoning can be prevented or the risk minimised if staff have the knowledge necessary and follow food safety guidelines.
