Nottinghamshire firms warned to comply with fire safety laws

Companies in the Nottinghamshire area are being advised of the importance of complying with fire safety regulations after a retailer in Mansfield was prosecuted for breaching them and putting staff and customers at risk.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has warned businesses that they must take their responsibilities under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 seriously, or they could face prosecution and even fines of hundreds of thousands of pounds. Besides this, a lack of fire safety awareness training or neglect in implementing fire safety measures could put lives in danger.

The Fire Service’s fire prevention manager, Vic McMillen, said:

“We are here to provide advice and support to local businesses and are always willing to help to make sure they comply with the fire safety legislation. However, the public should continue to be reassured that we take any breaches of fire safety very seriously and will use legal sanctions where necessary.
“We want to make sure that business owners are aware of their responsibilities and duties to ensure that their staff and customers are safe. It is disappointing when a company chooses to place people at risk from fire.”
