Olympics construction firms commended for health and safety records
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) last week expressed its satisfaction that the construction firms and contractors involved in the London 2012 Olympic Games project are adopting such a good attitude towards health and safety.
The Olympics Delivery Authority (ODA) was also commended by the HSE for taking such a ‘no-nonsense’ approach to health and safety training, to the management of health and safety risks at Olympic sites, and to the appointment of contractors with good safety records.
When deciding who to hand Olympic construction contracts to at the start of the 2012 project, the ODA made the choice to use mostly UK firms. A total of 98 per cent of the contracts were therefore given to construction companies based in the UK.
Steven Williams, who is the HSE’s director for London 2012, revealed that the various Olympic sites all have an exemplary safety record, and said:
“No matter what size your organisation, no matter what size your project, small changes in the way you operate can have a huge impact on the health and safety of your workers.”
“I want the rest of the construction industry to follow London’s lead.”
