Restaurant to re-open following food hygiene violations
A restaurant in Broughton near Preston which shut down due to food safety violations is to reopen under new management.
The original owners of the Burlingtons restaurant pleaded guilty to food hygiene offences in August 2010 and were fined £3,000 plus £2,000 in court costs. The head chef at the restaurant also resigned following the verdict.
Environmental health officers uncovered a number of problems in the kitchen of the restaurant, including unsanitary conditions and dirty walls, floors and door handles.
As well as saying that the kitchen was a risk of attracting vermin, inspectors also claimed that there was a danger of contamination at Burlingtons due to poorly labelled food and chopping boards that were in need of replacement. There were evidently insufficiencies in the food safety training provided to staff, as some employees were found to be neglecting personal hygiene standards and failing to wash their hands before preparing food.
The Burlington’s restaurant is now set to re-open, under the management of pub operator Mitchells and Butlers. Although it is assumed that improvements in food hygiene standards have been made, the exact terms of the deal have not been made public.
