Medication Awareness FAQs
What is medication awareness?
Medication awareness is a training course designed to teach individuals the knowledge and procedures required to safely and confidently administer and document patient medication. This course fully complies with current legislation and CQC guidelines.
Who is the medication awareness course for?
The medication awareness course is primarily for care professionals working in the health and social care sector, though is also suitable for anybody responsible for the management and administration of medication. It gives a basic introduction to the safe storage and dispensing of medication to patients and record-keeping practices.
What are the risks associated with the administration of medication?
Medication administration is a necessary process in any healthcare setting, however it also carries some risks. These vary depending on the medication, the method of administration and the patient receiving it. Common risks include adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, incorrect dosages, allergies and side effects. It is important to ensure that these are accounted for when a patient is administered any medication and that guidance is followed closely to reduce the risks.
Why is documentation important in medicine?
Many different healthcare professionals may be involved in the treatment of a single patient. Inaccurate documentation can result in miscommunication and ambiguity, which may then lead to incorrect dosages, adverse reactions being misdiagnosed and patient recovery times extended.
Does the course cover patient confidentiality?
Yes, aside from administration, the course also covers principles of patient confidentiality. It also provides guidance regarding who is accountable and responsible for administering medication as well as current legislation and legal requirements.
