What it means to be a personal licence holder – The Training Hub
If you own a personal licence, it means that you are legally responsible to authorise the sale of alcohol according to the requirements of the 2003 Licensing Act. Without this licence, you will not be able to work as an on-duty manager or supervisor in bars, pubs, restaurants, off-licences, nightclubs, supermarkets, sports and social clubs or gig venues.

Being a personal licence holder comes with a number of important responsibilities. For example, you will be accountable for:
- The responsible sale of alcohol
- The protection of children from harm
- What is and isn’t permissible within licensed premises
- Opening hours and operating schedules
- Specific prohibitions in relation to the sale of alcohol
In addition, you will also need to know about the strengths of different kinds of alcohol and their effects on the human body. With this knowledge, you will be able to manage your licensed premises responsibly and safely.
In order to get all of the information you need to apply for and attain a personal licence, you will need a particular qualification approved by the government and the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA). This qualification is the BIIAB Level 2 National Certificate for Personal Licence Holders, a one-day training course followed by an exam.
