Learning Disability Awareness Course

A learning disability is a reduced intellectual ability and difficulty with everyday activities. That can be tasks such as cleaning, dressing, socialising or managing money, which the individual may struggle with daily. People with a learning disability tend to take longer to learn new skills, they may not understand complicated information, and might not interact with others.

Learning disabilities can take many forms, with varying impacts on an individual’s life and behaviour. Learning disabilities stay with the individual for the whole of their life. Our learning disability course aims to raise awareness of the challenges people with learning disabilities face, while highlighting their potential strengths and capacity for independence.

The Learning Disabilities Awareness course has been designed to provide staff and volunteers, both clinical and non-clinical, with an introduction to learning disabilities and how they might impact each individual.

The Learning Disabilities Awareness course helps healthcare practitioners understand the issues surrounding learning disabilities. It also discusses the relationship between learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to help learners reflect on and improve how they care for people with learning disabilities.
