How is paediatric first aid different to adult first aid? – The Training Hub
If you are thinking of going on a first aid training course, it is important that you choose the most appropriate one for your situation. For example, if you will be working with children, or if you have children yourself, you will need to take a paediatric rather than an adult first aid training course.
Paediatric first aid is quite different from adult first aid training for the following reasons:
- Paediatric first aid is for children who haven’t yet reached puberty – after that age, adult first aid is more appropriate
- The training takes into account the size and physical development of the person to be given medical treatment – for example, a baby with medical difficulties will need drastically different treatment than a full-grown adult
- The training focuses on risks that are more likely to affect children rather than adults, such as choking, for example, young children are more likely to put things in their mouths that they aren’t supposed to
- Paediatric first aid training works on the assumption that children aren’t likely to be able to deal with certain medical situations themselves (i.e. minor cuts and burns).
